Rodrigo Viana - guitar
Brazilian guitar player born in the state of Minas Gerais in the beginning of the 80’s. In Belo Horizonte, his first years of practice and performance were based on Brazilian popular music, blues and rock. At the age of 17, he decided to become a professional musician and started studying music more seriously, focusing on jazz and Brazilian music.
In 2006 Rodrigo moved to Paris to deepen his study of jazz in a Conservatory of Music. There, he spent some years practicing jazz guitar and studying arrangement/orchestration which helped improve his playing and songwriting. In Paris he experimented with new connections with musicians from all over the world. One of the birthplaces of world music perfectly matched Rodrigo’s mixed roots and curiosity over different cultures and artistic expressions. Learning and mixing styles in this new environment enriched his creative process.
In 2010 he met Ray Lema, the legendary Congolese composer and pianist. It was a turning point in Rodrigo’s career. He appears as guitarist in Ray Lema’s album called “99”, released in 2010, alongside great musicians as Etienne Mbappé on bass (John Mclaughlin, Ray Charles, Ultramarine) and Conti Bilong on drums (Manu Dibango) . After four years of national and international tours with Ray, Rodrigo joined the Nzimbu project led by Ray, with Ballou Canta and Fredy Massamba, two of the greatest congolese singers nowadays. The album was released in Paris in January 2015 by One Drop label. In 2015 he performed with Stacey Kent for the european promotion of her album « Tenderly » (Sony Music), which counts with the participation of Roberto Menescal on guitar, Jim Tomlinson on saxophone and Jeremy Brown
on double bass.
In the following year Rodrigo recorded the guitars of the album of the famous french actor Lambert Wilson (Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions) called « Wilson chante Montand » produced and released by Sony Music. In the same year he worked as co-composer, arranger and guitar player in Jon Malkin’s album called « Electric Steam » also produced and released by Sony Music in 2016.
In 2018 he recorded another Ray Lema’s album called « Transcendence », alongside with Michel Alibo on bass (Salif Keita, Sixun), Nicolas Viccaro on drums (Richard Bona, John Mclaughlin), Sylvain Gontard on trumpet (Winton Marsalis, Lenny Kravitz, Lionel Richie) and Irving Acao on the saxophone (Chucho Valdes, Roy Hargrove, Michel Camilo). He toured with Ray Lema in Europe and featured in an interview by Guitare Seche Magazine to talk about the album and his guitar work in general.
In 2019 he devoted himself to the release of compositions written in collaboration with his partner Matthieu Eskenazi (bassist and composer) published and released by the Aurasky Music. The projet is called Jekitiba and it features Jeff Ludovicus on drums (China Moses, St Germain, Asa) and François Faure on keyboards (Manu Dibango).
